One-on-One Coaching in Coquitlam

Private Jiu-Jitsu Lessons

A private lesson is a session where the instruction is about you and nobody else. At True North Jiu-Jitsu you train one-on-one with a black belt who watches every repetition, corrects what is actually happening rather than what usually happens, and builds the session around the problem you walked in with.

Who Books Them

Five Reasons People Book a Private

You have hit a plateau

You are training consistently and something has stopped moving. Usually it is one habit repeating across every round. In a group class it is hard for a coach to catch. In a private it takes about ten minutes to find.

You are preparing to compete

Competition prep is specific work. A private lets you build a game plan around your best positions, drill the entries you intend to use, and pressure-test the parts you are least sure about.

You are coming back after time off

Injury, work, a new baby. Coming back to a full room after months away is intimidating. A session or two on your own rebuilds the movement and the confidence before you rejoin the group.

You want to start privately

Some people would rather learn the basics without an audience. Learning to fall, move, and hold a position one-on-one first makes that first group class a much easier door to walk through.

Group class times do not fit

Shift work, split custody, a commute that lands you home after the last class. Private lessons are scheduled directly with an instructor, so training fits the week you actually have.

How It Works

What a Private Lesson Looks Like

It starts with a conversation. What are you training for, what is going wrong, what have you already tried. If you are brand new, that conversation is shorter and we simply start at the beginning.

From there the session is drilling and live feedback. You repeat a position, the instructor adjusts a grip or an angle, you repeat it again with the correction. That loop is the whole value of one-on-one coaching, and it is the fastest way to break a habit.

Most sessions end with two or three specific things to take back into your regular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. Private lessons work best as a supplement to group training rather than a replacement for it, and we will tell you honestly when that is the case.

Booking

Getting a Session on the Calendar

Private lessons are booked directly with an instructor and scheduled around the mat availability at the academy, so the simplest way to arrange one is to call or send us a message. Tell us what you are hoping to work on and roughly when you can train, and we will match you with the right coach and a time that works.

If you have never trained with us before, you are also welcome to a free trial class first. Sitting in on a group session is a good way to see the room before committing to one-on-one work. Class times are on our schedule page.

Common Questions About Private Lessons

Have questions about one-on-one coaching at True North Jiu-Jitsu? Browse the most common ones below, or contact us for anything else.

No. Private lessons are open to current students and to people who have never trained here before. Plenty of people book their first session before they have set foot in a group class.

It can be. If the idea of walking into a full room is what is holding you back, a private lets you learn how to fall, move, and hold a basic position without an audience. Most people who start that way join group classes shortly afterwards, which is exactly what we want.

That depends on what you are trying to fix. A single technical problem can often be sorted in one session. Competition prep or a full game plan usually takes a series. We will give you an honest read after the first lesson rather than selling you a block up front.

Yes. We coach kids one-on-one as well as adults. It is a common choice for a child who is nervous about joining a group, or for a young student who wants extra work on something specific before a competition.

Often, yes. Two people working on the same problem can share a session, and having a consistent partner helps with drilling. Ask when you call and we will let you know what works for the coach you are booking with.

Athletic clothing you can move in, a water bottle, and a gi or rash guard if you own one. If you do not, come in shorts and a fitted shirt. Trim your nails, tie long hair back, and leave jewellery at home. Everything else we can sort out on the day.
